Diane Keaton admits her Broadway break came at a price.
The actress has revealed she battled bulimia for five years in secret after she was given the lead in Broadway musical Hair on the proviso she slimmed down for the part.
In an interview with People magazine, she recounted how the criticism deeply affected her and she started suffering an eating disorder as a direct result of his comments.
“I don’t think it was called bulimia then. It was just this trick you could do to lose weight. It’s a horrible problem, ugly and awful,” she said.
Only when publishing her memoirs has Keaton finally revealed her struggle with the illness, and she has praised sessions of psychoanalysis for helping her overcome the image issues she had in her younger days.
